Chili Fest Cancellation

Current events with the CoVID 19 virus have stunned all of us.  Our plans for celebrations like school and college graduations, weddings, holidays, and, yes the Henniker Rotary Annual Fire on the Mountain Chili Fest, originally scheduled for August 16 have all been put on hold waiting for decisions on public gatherings.

The Rotary Board of Directors has been carefully considering what new norms would need to be in place regarding social distancing and food service restrictions for both servers and attendees. In addition to managing social distancing and large group gatherings, we have been particularly concerned about our ability to recruit restaurants to participate due to the impact the pandemic has had on them and the publics’ concerns about having open food service at the event.

Given these uncertainties, we have come to the sad and difficult decision that we should cancel Chili Fest.

The Henniker Rotary Club is strong and will come through these hard times because we are “People of Action” and continue our commitment to both fund raising and the use of those funds for the communities we serve.  We are not going away. We have to change course and pivot to cope with these new norms but Rotary, and all of us, have been through hard times before.

The Henniker Rotary Club would like to say a special thank you to our long time partners and sponsors including: Pats Peak Ski Area, Granite Quill Publishers - The Messenger, 102.3  – The River, Ayer & Goss Fuels, Dunkin’ Donuts of Henniker, Davis & Towle Insurance Group, Edmunds ACE Hardware, Henniker Veterinary Hospital, New England College, Henniker Crushed Stone, Henniker Family Dentistry, Henniker Farm & Country Store, Henniker Pharmacy, Merrimack County Savings Bank and Morse Sporting Goods. Without this local business support, the Rotary Club “Fire on the Mountain Chili Fest would not have been the success it has been for the past 18 years.

And to all of you who attended the event over the years, thank you for helping the Rotary Club of Henniker make our service area of Henniker and Hillsborough such great communities of caring.

We hope you will share in our optimism and that you find it in your hearts and minds to see the bright future ahead.  Please take time now to consider how you can continue your support for all that our Rotary Members do in the community.  For instance, check out our new “Flags over Henniker and Hillsboro” initiative (see attached and our facebook link) and stay tuned for information about future Rotary activities. Better still, consider joining our club and being part of this important service organization. Contact George Mobley mblgcm@aol.com to learn more. With you as part of our team, we will celebrate the great spirit that binds our community together.

Flags to be Flying over Henniker and Hillsborough

The Henniker Rotary Club is pleased to announce an annual Community Flag Project in Henniker and Hillsboro to promote patriotism and to raise funds for charitable use in both communities. Similar programs have been successful throughout the United States and locally Hopkinton has done this for several years, with Weare also just starting a program.
Participation is easy, for a modest annual fee of$50.00 the Henniker Rotary Club will display an American Flag in your front yard or at your business around the five most patriotic days of the year: Memorial Day Weekend, Flag Day-June 14, Independence Day-July 4, Labor Day Weekend, and Veteran’s Day-November 11. At the placing of the flag for Memorial Day a short pipe will be driven into the ground and a 3’x5’ flag on a 10’ pole will be installed for each holiday. When the flag is removed after Veteran’s Day, the pipe will be removed. They do all the work and you have a beautiful American Flag displayed for the holidays while supporting your communities.
To get more information or to subscribe email HRCFlags@gmail.com. The Henniker Rotary Club meets on Thursdays at 7:30am at the Henniker Congregational Church hall on Maple Street and currently has 35 members who are dedicated to giving back to their communities.

Another successful Chili Fest

With another chili fest in the books, our coffers look a lot better. Because of the proceeds of this event, we're able to give scholarships to local students, grants to individuals and organization in local, regional and international communities, so we thank ALL of the participants in this process. Without slighting anyone, we especially thank the Chili Fest Committee and Pat's Peak for all they did to make this event a success. Over 1200 people attended and for a change, we didn't get rain. Please check out our Facebook pages for the wonderful pictures taken by member Evan Thompson.

Dr Thomas Andrew speaks to the club

Posted on Oct 21, 2015
State of NH Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Andrew spoke to the club regarding the epidemic of deaths resulting from the use of opioids, especially fentanyl and heroin. So far in 2015 there have been 258 drug-related deaths, with 82% caused by opiates and 84% of those from heroin and fentanyl or a combination of those two drugs. While pharmaceutical grade fentanyl is expensive, mobile labs manufacturing fentanyl that can be 200 times more potent than heroin pump that powder in the drug pipeline. Dr Andrew's presentation was both eye-opening and frightening.

Another Chilifest has come and gone, with wonderful reviews!! Although the weather around us seemed to have kept the crowds down, more than 1000 people enjoyed good chili, good music, classic cars, the Kids Zone, vendors of all sorts, good food (bbq, ice cream, shortcake, ices, hamburgers and hot dogs) and most of all friendship!. Many people say that they come just to see people they only run into once a year. Many people commented on how much they loved the new logistics by having the event outside and being able to go inside to sit and chat (and have a beverage). As always, we couldn't do this event without everyone who has helped us, including but not limited to, our Sponsors, contributors, vendors, caterers, Rotarians and their families and friends, the many, many volunteers and of course the chili makers!!! Posted by Joyce Bosse on Dec 18, 2014
For the third year, Henniker Rotary Club members and friends ventured out in the cold and dark to bring Christmas cheer to area residents. However, their first stop was to the community room at Rush Square, which was warm and bright, and appreciated by the residents.

Christmas wreathes

Posted by Joyce Bosse on Nov 29, 2014
Seven members were on hand to hang the Christmas wreathes on the lamp posts in downtown Henniker. Mary, John, Frank, Marc, Joe and Heather were directed by Dan on an unusally mild day after the Thanksgiving storm. It certainly makes the downtown more festive! Pictured are Charter member Joe Clement with the club's newest member Heather Aleksonis and project chair Dan DaCosta.

While we're sorry to see him leave as a member, we're happy for him and his new opportunities. He has promised that he won't forget us and will be helping us with some of our projects such as the wreath hanging and (hopefully) Chilifest. Good luck, Jay.

"Fred Marple" comes to Henniker

Posted by Joyce Bosse on Nov 07, 2014

As part of this year's motto "Light Up Rotary" the Henniker Rotary Club sponsored "Fred Marple" at the Henniker Community Center to a near-capacity crowd. In addition to the free performance, there was complimentary cider and donuts. Our own "Big Dog" from "Big Dog Security Systems" was on-hand to lend a voice to one of "Fred's" commercial interruptions (pictured here). Based on the sound of laughter, and audience participation in "Yoga for Yankees", the event was well received. Thank you Ken Sheldon for bringing us "Fred Marple".

Members of the Club and their families enjoyed an afternoon of relaxation at Amey Brook Park last Sunday. We once again proved what good "cooks" we are with a variety of meats, vegetables, salads and desserts to share. Thanks to Mary for organizing us and thankfully we were again blessed by perfect sunny weather. While we were there another family was also enjoying the Park. What a wonderful job the park committee has done with the mowing, weeding and care. Special thanks to Joe and Pat Clement!!!

Henniker Rotary club member Marc McMurphy, who is also the Director of White Birch Community Center, gave us an enlightening update on the activities and financing of the center. The number of programs and number of participants is truly amazing! Also speaking to the club was Sandra Bandieri of Banner Tours & Travel, a tour operator who puts together group tours to such places at New York, Boston, and even to the Rose Parade in California (is that on your bucket list?)    White Birch Program Director Beth Ann Paul was also in attendance at the meeting.

It was an eventful meeting with scholarship checks given to Rebecca Kuzma (Brooks Burtt) and Ian Robie (Vocational) and Rebecca presenting her speech from the 4-way test speech contest, remember she wasn't only our winner, but District winner as well! Perhaps one of the best comments she made was that she felt truly supported by this Rotary Club and hopes to one day become a Rotarian...that and an Orthopedic Surgeon. We certainly wish these two young people all the best in their very bright futures. And thanks to former member Patty Jensen for visiting the Club and helping Joe add to the club's coffers (think pink!!).
